Marian Goodman Gallery is delighted to announce an exhibition of new work by British artist Steve MᶜQueen. The exhibition opens on May 30, 2000. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, from 10 am to 6 pm, and in July, Monday through Friday, 10 am to 6 pm.
This is the artist's second solo exhibition at the Gallery. He will exhibit two new works: the film installation, Cold Breath, 2000, and Current, 1999—a piece that extends the artist's practice into the medium of slide projection. Neither have been seen before in the United States.
The 1999 winner of The Turner Prize by the Tate Gallery, Steve MᶜQueen was born in London in 1969. He attended the Chelsea School of Art, London, from 1989-1990, and then Goldsmith's College, from 1990-1993, where he earned a B.A. in Fine Art with First Class Honors. In 1993-1994 he studied at the Tisch School of Arts at New York University in the film department. He was awarded the ICA London Futures Award in 1996. Well known internationally since the early 1990s for his use of film as an art medium, MᶜQueen's films are usually silent, initially shot in black & white, and presented as floor-to-ceiling wall projections. Experimenting with pacing and editing, framing and unframing, movement and stasis, his films feature narrative and content as secondary element to the physical or psychological fact of the moving image itself.
Steve MᶜQueen's work is the subject of a travelling exhibition at Sala Mendoza, Caracas, Venezuela; Institute for Contemporary Art, Cape Town, South Africa; Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paolo, São Paolo, Brazil; and Museo Rufino Tamayo, Mexico City, Mexico. The artist has had numerous additional one-person exhibitions in major museums abroad, including the ICA, London; Kunsthalle, Zurich; Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; Portikus, Frankfurt; and an upcoming Artangel Project in London. His solo exhibitions in the United States include Four Projects at San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art; Deadpan at the Project Room at MOMA, New York; and Five Easy Pieces at the MCA in Chicago. Important group exhibitions include Documenta 10, Kassel; Retrace Your Steps at Sir John Soane's Museum, London; Ironisch/Ironic at the Museum Für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich; the Johannesburg Biennial 2, Johannesburg; New Images at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; Spellbound at the Hayward Gallery, London; Timing at the De Appel Foundation, Amsterdam; and Life/Live at ARC/Musée d'art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris.
