Tony Cragg Skulpturengarten Spanischer Turm
The Skulpturengarten Spanischer Turm will present the exhibition TONY CRAGG in the public space of Darmstadt. The extensive œuvre of Tony Cragg includes not only sculptures but also drawings and installations. His works, always marked by an intense engagement with natural forms and structures, frequently reference organic elements from nature.
Inspired from a young age, Cragg developed a deep interest in the materials, forms, and structures of nature—its life cycle from origin through transformation to decay. He translates these insights into new, abstract, yet uniquely recognizable forms. Repetition and drawing studies play a central role in his creative process.
For the first time in Germany, ten sculptural works by Cragg will be presented exclusively in public space. Spanning a sculpture trail of approximately 1.5 kilometers, the route begins with the over six-meter-tall double sculpture Points of View, made of stainless steel, located on the plateau of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Mathildenhöhe in the west. It continues through the park area of Rosenhöhe and concludes with the roughly six-meter-tall fiberglass work Mean Average in the Sculpture Garden at the Spanish Tower. In this way, Cragg’s works return once again to nature. The exhibition is further complemented by smaller sculptures and drawings shown inside the Spanish Tower itself.
The exhibition TONY CRAGG was developed in close collaboration with the City of Science Darmstadt. Running concurrently with the Darmstadt exhibition, the Heidelberg Sculpture Park will present five of Cragg’s sculptures from 18 May to 15 October 2025, in the area surrounding the Orthopedic Clinic in Heidelberg-Schlierbach.
