Niele Toroni - Omaggio a Niele Toroni E Harald Szeemann Museo Comunale d’Arte Moderna, Ascona
Curated by Bernard Marcadé, the exhibition highlights the artistic and intellectual bond between Niele Toroni and the late curator Harald Szeemann through an itinerary composed of paintings, documents, photographs and testimonies, which offer a renewed appreciation of the museum's enduring mural works.
This bond was solidified in 1991 with Toroni’s first solo exhibition in Ticino, curated by Szeemann at the Museo Comunale d'Arte Moderna di Ascona, where Toroni’s radical imprints continue to interact with the museum’s architecture.
The Ascona museum houses a permanent intervention by Toroni, Impronte di pennello no. 50 repeated at regular 30 cm intervals, a signature method he first applied in Paris at age 30. As Szeemann wrote, “The method that Niele Toroni applies for the first time in Paris, in a joint event with Buren, Mosset, and Parmentier, is simple, easily imitated by others, but, like all simple things, very complex, full of life, full of surprises, full of perfidy, full of play.”
