Cristina Iglesias - Hondalea The Lighthouse at Santa Clara Island, San Sebastian, Spain
Located inside an excavated lighthouse lies Hondalea, a breathtaking sculptural work by Cristina Iglesias that resembles the specific ecology, petrology and geology of the coastal region of the Basque coast and the oceanic waters that surround the island.
This lighthouse, located on Santa Clara in Donostia-San Sebastián, Spain, stood empty for many years until Iglesias incorporated it into the majestic work that opened to the public in 2021. Inside the restored building, visitors can gaze into the sculptural configuration of Hondalea as water rises up, as if from the sea below, surging through forms cast in bronze, before pooling and trickling away.
Iglesias, by implementing her unique, exceptional sculptural language, transfigures a remote location, turning it into a symbol for sustainability and conservation. During the summer of 2024, Hondalea will remain open to the public from 1 June to 30 September.
