A new project by Irish artist James Coleman, Photograph (1998-99), and his 1990 film Untitled: Philippe VACHER will open to the public on January 11, 2000. The exhibition will be on view through February 19, 2000. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, from 10 am to 6 pm.
During the past twenty years, James Coleman has been internationally recognized for his work in reproductive media such as film, video, slide-tape, and for his projects specifically produced for theater. He has engaged viewers in participatory works that reflect upon the psychological and historical character of perception. His multi-faceted installations explore historical and contemporary genres of representation and picture making such as the film thriller, the romantic melodrama, and the television serial.
Untitled: Philippe VACHER (1990) is a 17-minute film, which will be exhibited in the North Gallery.
Philippe Vacher (1951--1995) was a French film, TV, and theater actor, noted for his roles as a doctor and surgeon in French medical TV documentaries and hospital dramas. Interested in contemporary art and Experimental Film, Vacher was keenly aware of film and TV's influence in defining representations of the actor's professional and personal identity. The format and subject of Untitled: Philippe VACHER suggests a filmic allegory to these concerns.
Coleman's new project, Photograph (1998-99), exhibited in the South Gallery, consists of the multiple projection of synchronized slide images and a narrative voice-over. The photographic images document a mise en scène that takes place in and around the rehearsal hall of a community school, where a group of young actors and dancers re-enact dance routines and dramatized scenes for a school project in stages of rehearsal.
James Coleman's work has been exhibited widely in solo exhibitions at such institutions as Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels; the Wiener Sucession, Vienna; Musée National d'Art Moderne-Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Dia Center for the Arts, New York; Musée d'Art Contemporarin, Lyon; Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindoven; the Institute of Contemporary Art, London; ARC/Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris; and the Renaissance Society, Chicago. His work is currently the subject of a major solo exhibition at the Fundació Antoni Tapies, Barcelona.
