Smithson sought to challenge the traditional delineation between center and periphery, often placing more emphasis on the outskirts. Forking Paths (1971) was created in connection with Smithson’s travel to the southern coast of Florida that year, as he intended to make a forking island and an island maze off one of the Keys.
