An open jewelry box inside a Plexiglas display case contains a shell with a crystal ball in which a sealed white envelope has been inserted. The title, The Birth of Venus, alludes to the painting by Sandro Botticelli portraying the birth of the goddess of Beauty standing on the edge of a large shell. The sublime dimension of the deity in the Renaissance painting is manifested in Paolini’s work by the mystery of the sealed envelope: a metaphor for an ineffable dimension, the immaculate envelope concealing the secret of an unknown work of art.
